Imagine you have just witness an event that will reshape the world. How would you respond?
What was this pivotal moment that redefined the world? I am glad you asked. It was the moment that the son of God ascended to take his rightful position beside his Father in heaven.
I can hear the voices of the scoffing skeptics claiming that this was nothing other than the fabrication of a few mad men. Of course these skeptics are neither scholars of history, nor are they honest with themselves about why they try so hard to deny accepting that they are created beings. To accept belief in a higher authority demands a level of accountability that they are actively rebelling against. However, just as not believing in gravity makes no difference to the out come of stepping off a cliff so too denying God’s existence will not excuse you from the day of judgement.
How Do We Know This Was A Historically Pivotal Moment?
I could ask you “approximately how long ago did the ascension (the rising of) Jesus take place?” And whether you know it or not, you do actually know the answer. Because, unless you live under a rock, you probably know what year we live in – 2023 as I write this. And that is approximately how many years since the birth of Christ, with his death some 33 years later. A moment so pivotal that it redefined how we measure time
- BC: BC stands for “Before Christ.” It is used to label years before the estimated birth of Jesus Christ. For example, 300 BC means “300 years before the birth of Christ.”
- AD: AD stands for “Anno Domini,” which is Latin for “in the year of the Lord.” It is used to label years after the estimated birth of Jesus Christ. For example, 200 AD means “200 years after the birth of Christ.”
The significance of the person of Christ has been cemented in history by shaping our measure of time. Even if people are now trying to rewrite that history by using the abbreviation “BCE” (Before the Common Era) instead of BC and “CE” (Common Era) instead of AD. The pivotal date and its significance remains.
How Do We Know It Was THE Most Pivotal Moment In History?
Imagine a world before instant global communications such as cell phones and the internet. In Fact, go back before the fax machine, and the printing press. Back before automobiles and aeroplanes (airplanes for the Americans). In this world a man appeared who gathered a small group of twelve others and started a movement that spread around the world.
Despite many attempts to wipe out Christianity by killing the disciples of Christ and burning all the Christian literature it continues to survive in all parts of the globe. Is the church perfect? No. Has it been corrupted by fallible and often deceitful men. No question. But God still continues to use it as his solution to a lost and dying world.
The numbers don’t lie. As the quote goes “you can fool some of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” For two thousand years people have been giving up their wealth, giving up their own ambitions, giving their lives for this cause. A lie does not have that longevity nor are so many willing to go their graves to defend it.
I write to you with a message of hope and an invitation to consider the significance of the events described in Luke 24:51-53. These verses depict the ascension of Jesus Christ, an event that holds profound meaning for all humanity, believers and unbelievers alike.
In Luke 24:51-53, we witness the incredible moment when Jesus, after completing His mission on earth, ascends into heaven. This event marks His triumph over sin and death, and His establishment as the eternal King. It is a powerful reminder that Jesus is not merely a historical figure or a wise teacher, but the Son of God, the Savior of the world.
The eye witnesses to Jesus ascension were transformed in such a way that there was no going back. They responded with an urge to continually worship our creator.
The ascension of Jesus transcends time and culture. Even today the message of Christ transforms societies and brings hope to hurting individuals.
Now is a time to return to that moment where you first realized the power and significance of what Jesus has done for you. If you have not yet had a personal revelation then now is your time seek him. The window of opportunity is rapidly closing so reach out today, in prayer, in the Word of God (the Bible), or with a friend who is a believer.
Through the ascension we can find encouragement, hope, and purpose. God offers the same joy, that saw the original eyewitnesses continually praising and worshiping God, to you and me.
You can be assured of the divinity and authority of Jesus Christ because of his ascension. Because Jesus conquered the grave and rose again to be with God you can seek comfort in knowing that today he is petitioning God on your behalf. And because death could not hold Jesus you have the security of an eternal future. He can raise you from the dead also.
