Have you ever looked at a Church or group of Christians and thought to yourself that they are a bunch of simpletons? That they are obviously in Church because they need a “spiritual crutch.” You wouldn’t be caught dead mixing with those geeks and freaks, right?
Well it turns out that God is one step ahead of you there.
You see, it turns out that God knows humans have a little issue with humility, or our lack of it. So, to save us from our pride he makes sure that we are in no mistake as to where the credit is to go for his works. It hasn’t been a bunch of sinful misfits that have kept the Church alive and spreading for the past 2000 years.
I am not sure where you are at in terms of a relationship with God, but one thing is for sure, I am not going to persuade you that God exists. I can’t dazzle you with science, or convince you with clever arguments. In fact, if God hasn’t first reached out to you then all my attempts to convince you that there is a creator to whom you will have to give account will seem total foolishness. But God already had that covered too. “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” 1Cor 1:18 NASB
The good news about this that I am not responsible if you choose to scoff and walk away. It also means that I don’t have to be anything special. God chose to use me because I am weak and broken. If you are a Christian and feeling bad about the fact that you are “not good enough” then you need to understand that that is a lie coming from Satan. None of us are “good enough” and that is the point. God is sufficiently good enough for us. When the apostle Paul was feeling that he wasn’t good enough God said to him:
If you a Christian feeling like you are powerless then the answer is to draw near to God. If you are not a Christian then you need (wait for it …) to draw near to God. While I may not be able to convince you of the reality of God, if you honestly cry out to him then he will answer you. Or, as the Bible says that if you knock the door will be opened.
But why should you call out to God?
You might be a self-made like Arnold Schwarzenegger who needs no crutch. He has apparently decided that God is for sissys and he will face death alone. While that is an admirable ambition, I fear that they will come where he will regret that decision. It is a decision most likely based on the fact that he doesn’t want to be accountable for his actions (either past or present) so he thinks he can deny God and make it all go away. This is a bit like denying gravity and stepping of a cliff. What you believe has little bearing on the reality of the outcome.
God says in his Word, the Bible, that all men are without excuse (the term “men” also encompasses ladies and whatever you might self identify as, sorry) because all of creation points to a creator. You have the very language of God written in your DNA. The natural order of the Universe simply cannot be explained by a random explosion of nothing. Everything is structured and works according to “laws.” So much so, that when something breaks or operates contrary to the natural order then it immediately stands out as wrong. This sense of “right and wrong” does not come from a random explosion and billions of years of accidents.
If you are afraid to come before God because you don’t think you are “good enough,” then take comfort in the fact that Jesus was speaking to you when he said:
If you read the Bible you will discover that God has reached out to all kinds of sinners from thieves to murderers, adulterers to tax collectors, and everyone in between. Don’t let your past define your future. Don’t let your weakness be the crutch that you lean on to prevent you calling out to God for forgiveness. We will face God one day, whether we live in denial or not. It is far better to have that meeting now than to wait until you are called into “court” on the Day of Judgement.
But that is your call. I can’t persuade you if you are still sitting with the scoffers.
I can be here for those who are on the journey and feeling like they need some help. We all have times of struggle, or doubt, or times where we get overwhelmed. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you are struggling. But always remember that God is sufficient. In Him we are complete and without him we are nothing.
